This program prepares students to be qualified educational paraprofessionals in Title I schools and other school districts complying with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. The Education Paraprofessional program offers students a solid foundation in general education courses as well as education-related courses. Numerous elective courses are available to tailor the program to each student’s specific interests. Students with a criminal record should consult with the Michigan Department of Education to verify that they are eligible to work in this field. Students are encouraged to meet with an MCC counselor prior to starting this program for help with the verification process.
Upon completion of this program [CIP: 13.1501], graduates should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of certified/licensed staff and paraprofessionals.
- practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including requirements of confidentiality.
- demonstrate the ability to communicate with colleagues, follow instructions, and use problem solving and other skills that will enable the paraprofessional to work as an effective member of the instructional team.
- demonstrate knowledge of the legal issues related to the education of children and youth with disabilities and their families.
- demonstrate knowledge of the elements of effective instruction to assist teaching and learning as developed by the certified, licensed staff.
- demonstrate the ability to assist children and youth.

Take POLI 240 or POLI 110 (POLI110 does not meet Michigan Transfer Agreement requirements)
