This course provides a broad overview of the various skills and responsibilities of sport managers. Within a framework of sport management practices, students examine supervisory skills, ethics and governance, human resources, labor relations, facilities, marketing, accounting and finance.

Goal 1:  Examine issues in sports management.

  1. Evaluate legal issues with the sports industry and their impact on sports management.
  2. Evaluate ethical issues with the sports industry and their impact on sports management.

Goal 2:  Examine sport governance.

  1. Examine the interscholastic sport community.
  2. Examine the intercollegiate sport community.
  3. Examine the professional sport community.
  4. Examine the global sport community.

Goal 3:  Examine functional responsibilities of sports managers.

  1. Discuss facilities management.
  2. Discuss operations.
  3. Discuss accounting.
  4. Discuss budgeting.
  5. Discuss management and supervision of staff.

Goal 4:  Discuss labor relations in the sports industry.

  1. Examine collective bargaining.
  2. Examine free agency.
  3. Examine anti-trust issues.

Goal 5:  Explain sports marketing.

  1. Explain the marketing planning process.
  2. Explain the use of sponsorships.
