This course surveys major authors and works of British literature from the old English period to the late 18th Century.

Course Goals/ Objectives/ Competencies:
Goal 1: Students will relate thematic concerns of literary texts to their cultural and historical contexts.

Identify key ideas from representative authors and works, significant historical and cultural events, and characteristic perspectives expressed in literature of different periods or regions.

Goal 2: Students will analyze thematic and stylistic characteristics of works studied.

Describe distinct literary characteristics of the time period for their structure and meaning, using correct terminology and examples from different genres.

Goal 3: Students will document conclusions they draw in written responses to literary works studied.

Engage in literary discussion by formulating informed responses with evidence to support personal interpretation of the works assigned.
Compose critical response papers about the assigned readings in clear and grammatically correct prose using MLA format.
