This program prepares students to be qualified education paraprofessionals in Title I schools and other districts complying with the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, to substitute teach, and to work in a variety of other roles within a school district. The Education Support program offers students a solid foundation in general education courses as well as education-related courses. Numerous elective courses are available to tailor the program to each student’s specific interests. Students with a criminal record should consult with the Michigan Department of Education to verify that they are eligible to work in this field. Students are encouraged to meet with an MCC counselor prior to starting this program for help with the verification process.
Upon completion of this program [CIP: 13.0101], graduates should be able to:
- identify ethical and professional standards of conduct, including requirements of confidentiality.
- demonstrate the skills necessary to engage effectively as a member of an instructional team.
- demonstrate knowledge of the legal issues related to the education of children and youth with disabilities and their families.
- demonstrate knowledge of positive guidance strategies.
- articulate the effects of trauma and stress upon social and emotional development.
- identify key strategies and supports the promote resiliency in children.
- demonstrate skills of basic first aid and CPR.

Prerequisite courses may apply to this program. A minimum of 60 unduplicated credits (100 level or higher) are required for all associate degree programs.
