A survey of American literature from the Civil War to the present, with attention to representative cultural perspectives and intellectual movements.

Course Goals/ Objectives/ Competencies:
Goal 1: Students will develop the ability to write academic papers, analyzing literary themes and connecting literature to social and cultural trends and values.

Students will read and analyze primary and secondary literary texts.
Students will write essays on literary works, combining secondary texts with their own analysis.
Students will write essays situating literary texts and themes within the major social, political, and religious events of their eras.
Students will use MLA documentation techniques.

Goal 2: Students will comprehend social and cultural trends of the times, as manifested in literary and historical texts.

Students will engage in detailed class discussions analyzing literary texts and techniques and connecting literature with its influences.
Students will analyze secondary texts by literary and social critics.
Students will make oral presentations that synthesize their understanding of primary and secondary literary texts.
