SPAN 130 - Elementary Spanish I

This course is the first half of a two-semester beginning Spanish course designed primarily around conversational approaches to the language with instruction in the basics of Spanish grammar. Lectures and written exercises supplement an emphasis on oral recitation and classroom conversation along with an examination of pertinent aspects of Hispanic culture.
OFFERED: fall and spring semesters

Course Goals/ Objectives/ Competencies:
Goal 1:  Proficiency in communication skills: listening, speaking writing and reading with grammatical accuracy.

Objectives: The student will: 

  1. Begin to understand and speak everyday Spanish and learn to read and write in Spanish.
  2. Learn new vocabulary and grammar through varied opportunities that allow them to listen to and read vocabulary and grammar in meaningful and relevant contexts.
  3. Gain knowledge and understanding of Hispanic culture through exposure to multiple facets of life in the Spanish-speaking world.

Goal 2:  Competence in describing and discussing the Spanish culture and its place in the world.

Objectives: The student will: 

  1. Gain insight into the nature of language and culture through comparisons between the Spanish and English languages and between Hispanic cultures and their own.
  2. Learn the importance of Spanish in the world and the growing presence of Spanish speakers and Hispanic cultures in the United States.
