CBSY 101 - Ethical Hacking

This course will prepare students for a job in cybersecurity by giving students the knowledge and skills required to plan and scope a penetration testing engagement including vulnerability scanning, understand legal and compliance requirements, analyze results, and produce a written report with remediation techniques. Students will be prepared to take the CompTIA PenTest+ certification exam.

Course Goals/ Objectives/ Competencies:
Goal 1:  Explore planning and scoping.

  1. Summarize techniques that emphasize governance.
  2. Apply risk and compliance concepts.
  3. Demonstrate an ethical hacking mindset.

Goal 2:  Perform information gathering and vulnerability scanning.

  1. Demonstrate vulnerability scanning and passive/active reconnaissance.
  2. Analyze results of reconnaissance exercises.
  3. Manage vulnerabilities.

Goal 3:  Handle attacks and exploits.

  1. Explore approaches to expanded attack surfaces.
  2. Identify social engineering techniques.
  3. Perform attacks on networks, wireless, application-based, and cloud technologies.
  4. Implement post-exploitation techniques.

Goal 4:  Manage reporting and communication.

  1. Discuss the importance of reporting and communication in a regulatory environment.
  2. Analyze findings of pen testing.
  3. Utilize pen testing findings to recommend appropriate remediation.

Goal 5:  Investigate tools and code analysis.

  1. Identify scripts in software deployments.
  2. Analyze a script or code sample.
  3. Explain use cases of various tools used during the phases of penetration testing.
