ITIF 200 - Linux

3 Credit: (2 lecture, 1 lab, 0 clinical) 3 Contact Hours: [CSTC 127 ]


Ths course covers the competencies required of an early career systems administrator supporting Linux systems.  Focus will be on Linux terminology, system management, and Linux as a server.  Secuity and troubleshooting on Linux systems is also covered. Students are prepared to take the CompTIA Linux+ certification exam.

Course Goals/ Objectives/ Competencies:
Goal 1:  Optimize system management functions.

  1. Summarize Linux fundamentals.
  2. Manage files and directories.
  3. Configure and manage storage using the appropriate tools.
  4. Configure and use the appropriate processes and services.
  5. Use the appropriate networking tools or configuration files.
  6. Build and install software.
  7. Manage software configurations.

Goal 2:  Explore security.

  1. Summarize the purpose and use of security best practices in a Linux environment.
  2. Implement identity management.
  3. Implement and configure firewalls.
  4. Execute remote connectivity for system management.
  5. Apply appropriate access controls.

Goal 3:  Investigate scripting, containers, and automation.

  1. Create simple shell scripts to automate common tasks.
  2. Perform basic container operations.
  3. Perform basic version control. 
  4. Summarize common infrastructure as code technologies.
  5. Summarize container, cloud, and orchestration concepts.

Goal 4:  Restore basic hardware and software system issues.

  1. Troubleshoot storage issues.
  2. Troubleshoot network resource issues.
  3. Troubleshoot central processing unit (CPU) and memory issues.
  4. Troubleshoot user access and file permissions.
  5. Use systemd to diagnose and resolve common problems with a Linux system.
