INDS 122 - Industrial Applied Algebra 2 Credit: (2 lecture, 0 lab, 0 clinical) 2 Contact Hours: This course covers the algebra necessary for manipulating the formulas found in a shop setting, the use of calculators and some problem-solving techniques used in solving applied shop problems. Course Goals/ Objectives/ Competencies: Goal 1: Employ the use of a calculator to solve mathematical computations.
- Employ a calculator to do addition.
- Employ a calculator to do subtraction.
- Employ a calculator to do multiplication.
- Employ a calculator to do division.
- Employ a calculator to find a reciprocal of a number.
- Employ a calculator to find a square of a number.
- Employ a calculator to find a square root of a number.
- Employ the memory key on a calculator.
- Employ the fraction key on a calculator.
Goal 2: Employ algebra as used in industry.
- Convert from scientific notation to conventional numbers.
- Solve machine tool problems involving whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, and proportions.
- Identify and compare values of signed numbers on a number line using absolute values.
- Add, subtract, multiply and divide using signed numbers.
- Define the basic terms of an algebraic expression.
- Add and subtract algebraic terms.
- Simplify expressions containing symbols of inclusion, (), [], {}.
- Simplify expressions by applying the order of operations rule.
- Multiply two or more algebraic terms.
- Multiply a term by a quantity.
- Multiply a quantity by a quantity.
- Evaluate the numerical value of an algebraic expression.
- Solve linear equations using the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division properties of equality.
- Solve linear equations which require two or more properties of equality.
- Solve an equation by using the equality principle of powers or roots.
- Solve a formula for any variable it contains.
- Solve equations containing symbols of inclusion.
- Translate simple English phrases and sentences into algebraic expressions and equations and solve the equations.
- Solve problems involving ratio and proportion.

- Solve percent application problems.
- Solve problems involving direct and indirect variation.
- Solve quadratic equations using the quadratic formula.
- Solve shop application problems using combinations of the methods described above.
