Michigan Corrections Officer Training


(Code 1257)

This 15-credit-hour job training program satisfies the Michigan Corrections Officer Training Council (MCOTC) educational requirement for corrections officers. This program is designed to be delivered in a traditional or an accelerated format.

The accelerated format follows the guidelines below:

  • Students may enroll in all five courses in one semester (students may enroll in less than five).
  • Courses are run sequentially (one at a time).
  • Each course is offered five - six days per week (usually nights) for three weeks.
  • Students do not have to complete one course successfully to move on to the next course.
  • Limited course substitution is available (students should consult with a counselor or advisor)

General Notes:

Students must achieve a minimum 2.0 grade in each course to receive certification of successful completion from MCC.

To be considered for employment by Michigan Department of Corrections, students must have a high school diploma or GED and pass a written Civil Service exam, a physical fitness exam, a personal interview, a background investigation and a drug screening.

Students with a criminal record should consult the State of Michigan to verify that they are eligible to work in this field. Students are encouraged to meet with an MCC counselor/advisor prior to starting this program for help with the verification process.

Students interested in receiving an associate degree or certificate should see a counselor.

  • demonstrate understanding of the criminal justice system.
  • demonstrate understanding of legal issues.
  • demonstrate understanding of clients and client relations within the criminal justice systems.
  • demonstrate understanding of communication concepts used within the criminal justice system.

Program Requirements


GNST 100  offers skills needed to succeed in work-life. It is a required course and must be taken during the first semester at MCC.
